A Critical Review on Inflammation and Coronary Artery Disease Prevention

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality due to high risk for stroke, MI and related death. Lipid-lowering therapy with statins has been the major strategy, which has been shown to reduce major CV events. Despite catheter- and pharmacotherapy-based interventions, additional therapies are needed to reduce the rate of recurrent CV events.  Observed hs-CRP clearly predicted future CV events.  PCSK9 inhibitors and other human monoclonal antibodies with anti-inflammatory drugs reducing IL-6 and hs-CRP may overpower the lipid-lowering strategy.  Anti-inflammatory drugs might someday join the five-drug cocktail of aspirin, clopidogrel, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) statins and b-blockers.
